The essence of being a Christian is to be like Christ and the heart of Christ is captured in the cross; his willingness to bear our sins, to take our place, to carry our burdens. No wonder the Apostle Paul wrote, Carry one anothers burdens and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ (Galatians 6:2). It is wonderful to be part of an authentic Church family who cares for one another and bears burdens not their own. Our family experienced that burden-bearing blessing these past few weeks in the loss of my lovely wifes Mom and how our Church family cared for us. Of course there are burdens of all kinds that weigh each of us down, not just the loss of a loved one. There is a part of intimacy through the burdens we bear, some thrust upon us by the providence of God and others freely taken up out of love and compassion for a burdened brother or sister in Christ.
