The evening movie: 1968, The Thomas Crown Affair. Fun heist/romance film, with a very original multi-screen technique (which I am glad never caught on for long) and some fine performances from Steve McQueen and Faye Dunaway. The score was fascinating -- Michel Legrand was apparently shown a five hour rough cut, went away and wrote 90 minutes of music, then they edited the film to fit that score. Highly unusual technique. I do have to say that the Oscar-winning song The Windmills of Your Mind may be one of the least lyrical, most pompous songs its ever been my displeasure to hear. I can recall it being done to death as a child on talk shows. It comes close to being the worst choice of the history of that incredibly bad category. Other than that, an enjoyable movie with the typical vague anti-authoritarian message of the period (Its the system).
