The fact that people are harping on Chris Deschene because he doesnt speak fluent Navajo is ridiculous. Its just as ridiculous as harping on Dineh Benally for not being full Navajo. Joe Shirley may speak fluent Navajo but he certainly isnt eloquent when doing so. Reality is the Gen Xers, Gen Y, and Millennials who make up the majority population of the Navajo Nation arent fluent speakers, they may understand and/or speak basic Navajo. My point is, speaking fluent Navajo alone does not make you a leader. Characteristics such as honesty, integrity, ethics, respect, creativity, flexibility, being able to inspire and delegate, having good communication skills, etc. make you a good leader! This doesnt negate the fact that we should all be making an effort to learn our language. At least, Mr. Deschene is trying, how many of us can say that? My rant for the day. Thank you for listening. :)
