The family photo of my auto mechanic vacationing at a lakeside in North Carolina showed his three grandchildren, his grown and married sons and daughters-in-law, and his wife. Every face in the photo had a real smile. They had the kind of smiles that show in the eyes. He showed me the picture while I was paying my bill. I do not mind paying him. He’s an honest fellow who does good work. I commented on their true smiles. He said he had noticed the same thing and had mentioned it to his wife. “The eyes tell the truth,” I said, “especially when eyes smile.” People say, “The eyes are the windows of the soul.” It is true. The eyes can shine light. You’ve seen it. I know you have. I’ve seen it. It cannot be faked. Rumi* said, “The light which shines in the eye is really the light of the heart. The light which fills the heart is the light of God, which is pure and separate from the light of intellect and sense.” That light is not about beauty, or smarts, or anything else. It cannot be faked. It cannot be hidden. It cannot be controlled or contained. The eyes shine from a belly full of God, and tell the truth about the soul. Let’s Pray: Feed me light, O God, that I may have a belly full, that my eyes may speak Your truth, for my words cannot contain You or express You. Amen.
