The famous writer C. S. Lewis was certainly not a typical academic, which is why this event late in his life was significant. Shadowlands was based on a play written by his step son, one of Joy Davidmans two sons who were cared for by Lewis after her death and who are still involved with his estate. The 1993 film was rather low-key and did not garner the accolades usually engendered by Anthony Hopkins, but the portrayals by Hopkins and Debra Winger were brilliant. Debra Winger was at the top of her game at that time, but she retired from acting soon thereafter, while Hopkins went on to his more famous roles. This film covers the portion of C. S.
