The federal government and its client interests—mostly environmental ideologues—have evinced a steadily growing hostility to residents of the west. But even in the absence of bad policy, devolution of land to the states or, better still, to private owners is a matter of republican principle: a self-governing people need to own and control the land precisely in order to be self-governing in the fullest sense of the term.
