The federal government and the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) are close to resolving all issues that led to the current strike by the lecturers. After a closed-door meeting in Abuja yesterday, the newly inaugurated Benue State governor Gabriel Suswam-led committee on Needs Assessment of Nigerian Public Universities said the strike “will soon be over.” It was learnt that the federal government had agreed to meet the demands of ASUU except two issues, which will be resolved next week. Addressing journalists at the office of the secretary to the government of the federation, Suswam said; “After so many hours of deliberation, we were able to agree on major issues as will be briefed to you by the SGF except on two issues.” According to him, the issues yet to be agreed upon include the intervention/funding of the universities and the end allowance for the lecturers, adding that the two issues will be resolved next week. “The SGF will meet on the end allowance of salaries of lecturers on Monday and my committee, which is dealing with the Needs Assessment Committee, will be meeting again on Thursday when we will look at all the infrastructural deficit as it relates to our universities and see when government will start implementation. We will involve all the agencies dealing with the funding of the universities,” Suswam said. .....d prof
