The fight against crime remains the number one priority for the People’s Partnership Government. · The Government, led by Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar, continues to work persistently at modernizing the capabilities of the Trinidad and Tobago Police Service, reducing the crime rate and creating a safer Trinidad and Tobago. National Security policies and initiatives in place by this Government to further reduce crime include: - Improved Visibility and Response of Law Enforcement Agencies to strengthen community confidence and create greater public access. The higher visibility of law enforcement officers is a direct response to calls by citizens for the Police Service to answer distress calls in a more timely and effective manner and afford citizens a general feeling of security. - The implementation of an integrated radio network so Police can communicate effectively, reduce police response times and better serve communities in a timely manner. - The expansion of the CCTV Network by 500 cameras throughout Trinidad and Tobago to enhance law enforcement capabilities, to detect, deter and respond to crime and other incidents that would otherwise go undetected; - Equipping all Trinidad and Tobago Police Service vehicles with GPS Technology, in an effort to improve police response to calls for service by community members and increased police accountability for vehicles; - Body cameras for police officers to be provided as evidence in the case of accusations by the public about excessive force being meted out to them by police officers. CCTVs would also be placed on dashboards of Rapid Response vehicles. These cameras can also serve to identify potential misconduct by any Police Officer or to show that the Officers operated within the law. - Training Police Officers to improve police Professionalism on the job and in their interactions with citizens through proper customer service and protocol training; - Training of Crime Scene Investigators is on-going at the National Security Training Academy (NSTA). To date, the Academy has trained more than 269 Crime Scene Investigators (CSIs) to increase the staff at the Homicide Investigations Bureau of the TTPS. These new CSIs have been contributing to a gradual improvement in the detection rate of serious crimes and a more professional approach in forensic recovery. - On-going activities within communities which aid in improving relations between the Police and the public. · These measures have led to a drop in serious crime in T&T by close to 40%.
