The fight goes on - every progressive idea since before FDR has been fought tooth and nail by conservatives who want little to change. The minimum wage, the 40 hour work week, SS, Medicare, the right to collectively bargain, etc, etc, all have helped working people improve their lot. The TEA party folks seem to be taking us back toward the 1920s and 30s while the wealthy get more so and working people are having a harder and harder time doing well.
