The fire engine bell.A hold over from the days of the horse-drawn steam powered fire engine. The steam whistle of the boiler and the bell were all the had in those days to warn people in the streets the engine was coming and to get out of the way. After the horse-drawn steamers were only a memory, the bell was all that remained of the old rigs and the brave firefighters who manned them. There was no OSHA then,no air tanks and radios to call for help if a firefighter was trapped in a burning structure.Just the courage of those brave men of long ago who risked their lives to save the families and homes without any thought for their own safety. Now even the fire bell is vanishing. It is rare to see it on modern fire rigs.Next time you see an engine racing to a fire, think about the men and women on it.Will they return unharmed to quarters.....
