The first King in Prussia: On 18 January 1701, the Elector - TopicsExpress

The first King in Prussia: On 18 January 1701, the Elector Frederick III of Brandenburg crowned himself King Frederick I at Königsberg; to indicate that his royal title was limited to Prussia, he called himself King in Prussia instead of King of Prussia. By the time Frederick I crowned himself as king, the Holy Roman Emperors authority over the Hohenzollern domain of Brandenburg was only nominal, and in practice it soon came to be treated as part of the Prussian kingdom rather than as a separate entity. Thus did Prussias rise to great power status begin with a finely conceived legal distinction. Frederick Is grandson Frederick the Great was the first Prussian king to formally style himself King of Prussia.
