The first details of STVs live referendum debate have been revealed with the order of speaking decided by a series of coin tosses. Representatives from both sides of the campaign met at the Royal Conservatoire of Scotland on Wednesday, venue for the landmark showdown between Alex Salmond and Alistair Darling. The First Minister and the leader of the Better Together campaign will grill each other in front of an audience of voters on Tuesday, August 5. The outcome of the coin toss determined that Mr Salmond would speak first in the opening and closing statements. Mr Darling will lead the cross-examination section, in which the two men will question each other on key referendum questions. The 350-strong audience has been specially selected in conjunction with opinion research firm Ipsos-MORI Scotland to represent fairly Yes, No, and undecided voters. Salmond and Darling: The Debate will begin at 8pm with the results of a new Ipsos-MORI poll on voting intentions. This will be followed by opening statements and initial questioning of the speakers by STVs Political Editor Bernard Ponsonby. This will be followed by cross-examination and then audience questions. In part four, both sides of the campaign will give their reactions in STVs spin room. The debate will conclude at 10pm and will be followed by a special edition of Scotland Tonight at 10.30pm featuring analysis of how the two politicians performed in the face-off. Gordon Macmillan, Head of STV News, said: “We’ve had considerable media interest from across the UK and around the world in the first debate involving Alex Salmond and Alistair Darling. We anticipate the STV programme next Tuesday will be informative and engaging, and will be available to watch live on air and online.” Viewers from the rest of the UK and across the world will be able to watch the debate online with a globally available livestream on the STV Player. Viewers will be encouraged to join the debate from home on Twitter, Facebook, and Google+. Bernard Ponsonby will be answering viewers’ questions on the debate on the STV News Facebook page on Thursday afternoon. #yesscot #bettertogether? #scotnight #indyref
