The first photo is at a cafe where I first met Franka Jelavic in the summer of 1993. Her father and his high school friends had met here for coffee every Saturday morning for 55 years. I had asked this table of Croatian gentlemen for directions when Franka stopped by to see her father on the way back from the main market laden with bags of groceries. As we started talking that day, I mentioned that I had just graduated film school. She said the knew a film director. She handed me her groceries and told me to follow her. We went back to her Austrian era apartment across the street from a beautiful city park called Zrinjevac. She called Pavle Vranican and invited him for lunch to meet me. This was a momentous day for me. Franka became my sister and my best friend in Croatia. And three weeks later I joined Pavles expedition to Nepal and left for Kathmandu. Had I not met these two, I never would have stayed in the country back then. 21 years later, I brought together my first two Zagreb friends for a dinner of all my people on our last night in Zagreb.
