The first three paragraphs of my Batman story, Gotham Nights. This story looks at the Batman saga through the point of view of Jim Gordon. Jim Gordon sat in the driver’s seat of the parked unmarked police car, slipping on a cup of lukewarm coffee. He stared down the street, towards an old three story hotel in what the citizens of Gotham City commonly referred to as Slumville. It was the one of the oldest parts of Gotham, dating back to the early 18th century. It was also one of the poorest, and crime as everywhere. It was a reality that Gordon and his partner Miles O’Hara knew all too well. In the twelve years since Gordon joined the Gotham City Metropolitan Police Department, he had seen more crooked police officers that actual crooks. Gordon was a Sergeant in the major crimes division, but he would have been a Captain or even higher if he had “played ball”. But taking bribes and looking the other way wasn’t Gordon’s style, and he quickly gained a reputation of being the ‘Man Who Couldn’t Be Bought’. It was a dangerous reputation too. He figured that the only reason he wasn’t at the bottom of Gotham River was that he was a member of just a handful of honest cops. Not it say his actions didn’t go unnoticed, the Gotham City District Attorney Harvey Dent had asked Gordon to join the Internal Affairs Division. Of course, Gordon knew that IAD was just as crooked as the rest of the cops. Gordon knew for a fact, even though he had no hard evidence, that over fifty percent of all the cops in the city where on the take. This included the Gotham City Metropolitan Police Department, the Gotham City Port Authority Police Department, the Gotham City Transit Police Department, and even the Gotham School District Police Department. Hell, even the Gotham Prison and Arkham Asylum weren’t immune to the corruption. He also knew that the corruption reached as high as the Chiefs of each department and maybe even the Police Commissioner himself.
