The first time I encountered flamenco was eventful. I was at someones house. I forget who—it was an acquaintance, not someone I was all too familiar with. We had a bunch of folk dancers over. At the end of the night, some gypsies brought out their guitars, and this statuesque woman approached the floor. She was dignified, but had an air of melancholy about her. As the guitarists began to strum, she moved her body in the most feminine way Ive ever seen. I was entranced. Her dancing called upon something primeval withing me. It wasnt lust, it was this overwhelming feeling of love mixed with sorrow. I wanted to take her away, show her the world—but even I knew this was just projection, and that all these feelings were because she was so very good at dancing. Flamenco is perhaps the most passionate music Ive ever encountered. Im not so aware of the history, but its got a power that cannot be touched.
