The first week of Ramadan is a vital stage for TV watchers to decide which series is worth their time to follow for the rest of the month. Usually, the series with the most formidable cast and propaganda campaign wins over many people prior to the airing of the first episode but is that enough? Apparently not. One of the most highly anticipated series this year- Saraya Abdin – is being intensely criticized for its inaccurate and faulty retelling of historical events. Saraya Abdin is a historical series recounting the inner workings of the royal palace during the reign of Khedive Ismail in Egypt. 1. The Abdin Palace wasn’t even around then The first mistake caught by many was that the Khedive celebrated his 30th birthday in the Abdin palace, which means the episode was taking place in the year 1860. The Abdin palace, though, was actually only fully constructed by 1872. 2. Khedive Ismail was not yet a khedive Another mistake was that when Ismail was 30 he was still a “wali” – he earned the title “khedive” a full six years later. 3. Prince Fouad hadn’t been born yet Another chronological error is Prince Fouad’s age during those first episodes. It’s implied that Prince Fouad was around 10 years old at the time when, in reality, he wasn’t even born for another 8 years. 5. Inappropriate props and awkward accents Not to mention the use of some anachronistic props such as a quartz clock (not invented till the year 1927) and the confusing range of accents used by the actors.
