The follow winter (2009 / 2010) we re-clad the Lord Dowding - TopicsExpress

The follow winter (2009 / 2010) we re-clad the Lord Dowding Memorial Hangar roof. This was a very problematic roof to re-clad, as we had to calculate the exact radius of the roof, so we could order the correct radius sheets. If we made a mistake, none of the sheets would have fitted and that would have spelt financial disaster to us as a Charity. Luckily one of the volunteers has a background in quantity surveying and construction. The radius was also double checked by a friend of the Museum who at the time was a bridge engineer, just to be on the safe side! The radius of the roof was also problematic for Dave and Grahame, as each sheet had to be carried up manually between the two of them. Only the top couple of rows of ridge sheets could be craned onto the roof. Inside the hangar various volunteers worked on scaffold towers, drilling the holes for the hook bolts to be fitted and bolted up. Not the easiest thing to do with the exhibits below, and most of the aircraft had to be moved to allow access for the scaffold towers. It was also another bad winter for snow!
