The following email contains the link information for the students who would like to be apply for the graduate program in USA, University of Nebraska, Lincoln in the Department of Chemistry: ********************************************************************************** Dear Sayed M Shamsuddin, Greetings from Nebraska! I write to you as Chair of the Department of Chemistry at the flagship campus of the University of Nebraska here in Lincoln (UNL). Please encourage your students to explore UNL as one of their choices for graduate school. Chances are we have what they’re looking for in a graduate school. We are a BIG Ten Chemistry Department that offers both cutting-edge research and personal attention. Research groups are typically of a size (6-12 members) that allows students to interact directly with their professors and rapidly develop into top-notch scientists. The Department focuses on areas at the frontiers of Chemistry; namely Chemical Biology, Functional Materials, Computational Chemistry and Chemical Education. Check out the innovative research going on in the Department: chem.unl.edu/faculty/. Computational Chemistry at Nebraska received a big boost this past July with the hiring of recent ACS President and National Academy of Sciences member Joseph Francisco as the Cordes Chair of Chemistry and Dean of the College of Arts & Sciences: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Joseph_Francisco. This hire nucleated the formation of the Nebraska Cluster for Computational Chemistry: youtu.be/11qw2wQFNRs. We have a great heritage. The Nebraska ACS Section is the 7th oldest ACS Chapter in the entire US, founded in 1895, in the days when Rachel Holloway Lloyd led the Department. Rachel Lloyd was the first American woman to obtain a Ph.D. in Chemistry and on October 1, 2014, she was declared a National Historic Chemical Landmark by the ACS (acs.org/content/acs/en/education/whatischemistry/landmarks/rachel-holloway-lloyd.html). UNL Chemistry is located in a large 9-story, 220,000 square foot structure known as Hamilton Hall. The structure is named after Cliff S. Hamilton, a national leader in Organic Chemistry, who served as Chair of the Division of Organic Chemistry and who developed Camoquin, an anti-malarial drug that is still in wide use. organicdivision.org/?nd=archives_history Facilities are simply top-notch here. UNL Chemistry is home to the Nebraska Center for Mass Spectrometry (NCMS), one of the six original designated NSF Regional Instrumentation Facilities. NMR is outstanding as well, with a brand new 700 MHz spectrometer, having just been installed to accompany an ultra-shielded 600 MHz instrument for solid state work, a 500 MHz with cryoprobe for protein work, and a workhorse 400 MHz instrument for routine, hands-on usage. A Ph.D. in Chemistry from the University of Nebraska will place your students on the right trajectory for an exciting, opportunity-rich career in chemistry. But don’t take our word for it, ask our students and alumni. According to Graduate Programs, the UNL Department of Chemistry is currently Number 12 among the “Top Student Rated Chemistry Programs.” graduateprograms/top-chemistry-programs/ Here is a link to a short feature on some our Ph.D. graduates and their career paths: chem.unl.edu/videos/chem-alumni.shtml. As you can see, our alumni are a very successful group, holding leadership positions in academia, in federal government laboratories and across the industrial sector, from pharma to biotech to fine chemical production. Your students can be a member of this winning team as a future Nebraska Ph.D. I encourage you to urge your students to go online and apply: chem.unl.edu/grad/apply.shtml. Lincoln is also a wonderful place to live. It has many of the cultural advantages of a big city (Lincoln Symphony Orchestra, Broadway shows at the Lied Center, renowned speakers, etc.) but with a population of 270,000, and levels of safety, clean air and bike paths not normally seen in a city. The West Haymarket area is exploding with construction around the beautiful new Pinnacle Bank Arena that now draws top acts in entertainment (Paul McCartney, Jay-Z, Pink, Elton John, the Eagles, Katy Perry, etc.). Your students can experience the animated interactions in and among research groups at Nebraska and the momentum in the Department with the hiring of seven new faculty members in the past four years. Do not hesitate to contact me if you have any questions, or better still, stop by my office if you are traveling through Lincoln. Sincerely, David Berkowitz Willa Cather Professor and Chair UNL Department of Chemistry [email protected] chem.unl.edu/faculty/berkowitz.shtml
