The gap between Perth’s innercity “haves” and the outer-city “have nots” has been exposed by a suburb-by-suburb analysis of basic services and facilities. The American company Walk Score has determined the “walkability index” of suburbs across Australia by calculating the distance between homes and services such as supermarkets, cinemas, parks, medical services, shops, restaurants and schools. It found a big difference in the services available in Perth’s inner suburbs, compared with growing fringe suburbs. Some of Perth’s outer suburbs were among the worst in Australia. A score between 90 and 100 means residents had good access to services and could accomplish most daily errands without needing a car. But a score below 50 showed residents had to rely heavily on a car to get access to basic services
