The geography of Uttarakhand, the land of peace, tranquility, and an important pilgrimage destination for many of us, was forever changed by the cloud bursts, flash floods and massive devastating landslides caused by an early onset of monsoon. The raging waters virtually annihilated villages , towns , settlements everything that came its way. A few thousand people lost their lives and many more, a much bigger number of people barely saved their lives but lost almost everything else they had. We still do not know the magnitude of the calamity but there is an urgent need to help those who are left without a home and their belongings. Compassion brings out the best in a person. After the heart-wrenching devastation, many tourists and locals joined hands with the army and the local administration in rescue operations. Relief continues to pour-in from across geographies. But perhaps to demonstrate the principles of economics, supplies remain a fraction of the demand. The hospitals are overcrowded; homeless people are living in makeshift shelters with no proper food or clothing.
