The giant tortoises of Pinzón Island -- an arid, rocky island in - TopicsExpress

The giant tortoises of Pinzón Island -- an arid, rocky island in Galapagos -- were exploited by whalers in the 1800s, leaving their population at fewer than 200 individuals. Then introduced rats, which preyed upon virtually all young hatchlings, prevented the population from growing. Repatriation efforts began in 1971, and a rat eradication campaign took place in 2012. Can the tortoise population now sustain itself without outside intervention? This is one of the questions Dr. James Gibbs of SUNY-ESF and his team hope to answer with their recent trip to Pinzón to conduct a comprehensive population survey of its tortoises: bit.ly/1yVFNgR. The first photo below shows the first repatriation of tortoises to Pinzón in 1971, and the second photo shows several repatriated tortoises in 1982 -- ages 15, 10, and 5 years old. #tbt
