The goods were recovered from a residence in Ntinda. The items are said to have been imported from Sri Lanka and were headed for DR Congo. However, the goods were later taken to a palatial home, whose owner remains unidentified, without being declared for a potential tax assessment, according to a statement from URA. Patrick Onder, the director Ikuk’s Investments Uganda Limited, a clearing agency, and the driver of a truck that transported the goods, were later arrested. Julius Mponoka Nkwasire, URA’s manager, Enforcement Operations, said the goods were offloaded from the truck with the intention of selling them in Uganda without paying taxes. Goods warehoused for home consumption are cleared on payment of taxes while those warehoused for re-exportation do not pay taxes. Goods in transit, when diverted without paying the due taxes, imply unfair competition in terms of pricing on the market for those traders who duly comply
