The government of Ghana should begin to demonstrate genuine - TopicsExpress

The government of Ghana should begin to demonstrate genuine commitment to media freedom. The spate of impunity over media rights violations across the country and governments indifference to same is extremely worrying. As clearly articulated in the UN Action Plan on Safety of Journalists and the issues of Impunity, the primary responsibility for the protection of journalists, as with any other citizen, rests with the state. So the government should take note of this. Yes, journalists have to be professional in their work and there have been legitimate concerns about professional lapses in the media. However, violence against journalists and media censorship is not, cannot and should be among the redress mechanisms for ethical or professional infractions by journalists. Watch out for Ghanas ranking in the next Freedom of the Press Index.
