The hardest thing for a film fan to understand, and especially those of us a little older, is that we do not always understand that NOT EVERYONE are movie fans. Most of the people I see in my daily life on a regular basis are casual movie watchers. Ya know, they may rent that new superhero movie or the new comedy of the week but they arent versed in film, film history, directors, writers, make-up people and even actors. You might be surprised how many people out there just dont know the names of actors--even BIG ones. If it isnt that important to them, why should they know? I couldnt list the names of more than maybe 10 professional football players playing today. I couldnt even list the teams these days. I am often shocked to learn of a new team that started in the last decade. Tennessee Titans? Who? So I often see some of us forgetting this fact. And we will call someone stupid or an idiot for not knowing details about film. And sadly we often will take it out on young people. When a young person tells us they never saw or heard of a movie we consider to be a classic. Well yeah, if they werent looking for the movie then why would they know it? The only movies I knew about growing up were the movies that came out during my lifetime. It wasnt until later when I became a film nut that I learned about other films made before my time. And I still, after 25 years of being a film fan, discover older films I never knew about. Even film series that I never heard of. Why would I? I wasnt even alive. I am posting this because I just saw someones intelligence questioned on a post. A guy bought some Elm Street dvds at Wal Mart and the teenaged clerk thought they were sequels to the 2010 remake. She was viewed by some people as an idiot. But really...if she wasnt a movie fanatic and she was a teenager, then why should we assume that she knows about all of the older films that were made 25-30 years ago? Take the opportunity to let her know. Now she knows.
