The hero and the reporter - One day, a man was visiting the National Zoo in Washington, D.C. As he approached the lion’s cage, he noticed a little girl leaning into the cage between the bars. Suddenly, one of the lions hooked his claws in her collar and tried to drag her through the bars. Without hesitation, the man ran to the cage, reached in, grabbed the lion by the mane, and punched it squarely in the nose. Whimpering with pain, the lion let go of the little girl, and the man pulled her back from the cage and handed her to her terrified parents, who thanked him over and over again. As this was happening, another man came running up and grabbed him by the arm. “Sir,” the second man shouted, “that was the most gallant and courageous thing I’ve ever seen!” The other man replied “Oh, it was nothing, really. After all, the lion was behind bars, and I just did what anyone else would do.” The second man said “You’re very modest as well as courageous! Sir, I’m a reporter for the Washington Post, and I’m going to make sure that your heroism doesn’t go unnoticed! This story will be on the front page of the newspaper tomorrow if I have anything to say about it! Now, let me just get some basic information.” The reporter took out his notepad and said “First of all, what’s your name, and where do you live?” The man gave him his name and indicated that he lived in Alexandria, Virginia. The reporter then said “Okay, great. What do you do for a living, and just out of curiosity, what are your political leanings?” The man replied “Well, I’m a retired U.S. Marine and a conservative Republican”. The reporter turned abruptly and left. Next day, the man bought a copy of the newspaper, and saw the lead article, in banner headlines right across the front page: “US MARINE ASSAULTS AFRICAN IMMIGRANT AND STEALS HIS LUNCH!” … And that pretty much sums up the state of journalism in America today!
