The high profile US Foundation created by the late actor and philanthropist Paul Newman, is offering $US1 million in grants for Australian Not for Profit projects focused on nutrition. The Foundation says the funding will be available for large and small charitable organisations that administer nutrition programs, particularly those that deal with education and fresh food access for underserved communities. “We are inspired by the creative approaches that are growing in the nonprofit sector to help address challenging issues around nutrition,” President and CEO of Newman’s Own Foundation, Robert Forrester, said. “In recent years, the Foundation has significantly increased its support for nutrition projects in Australia and around the world. Our goal is to fuel the momentum that is building to help create more and better food choices for those who need it most.” Newman’s Own Foundation said it was seeking grant applications from charities across the country with projects that address nutrition issues such as school breakfast/lunch programs, food rescue initiatives, Indigenous nutrition and fresh food access, childhood obesity, and nutrition education. The grants are up to $100,000 and amounts will be determined based on the size of the charitable organisations and the specific initiatives. Newman’s Own Foundation Australian advisor Dimity Pinto said that several significant nutrition programs had already been funded in recent years. “In the last two years alone, the Foundation has funded a chef for the children’s hospice Bear Cottage (NSW), an Indigenous healthy food education program (WA), a lunch program for disadvantaged children (Victoria), Asylum seekers’ nutrition projects (NSW and Victoria), and a Down’s Syndrome SA healthy eating initiative (SA),” Pinto said. The expression of interest application period is May 1-30.
