"The immense tragedy at Lampedusa... is unbearable for any human being," The mayor of Lampedusa, described the scene as a "continuous horror". “Some left from Libya and other parts of North Africa. Others crossed from Greece and Turkey. Most come from Sub-Saharan Africa, particularly Somalia and Eritrea. Others from Egypt, Pakistan and Syria” “often the vessels are overcrowded and are not seaworthy. Over the years, many have died when their boats have sunk”. I went to Libya on a business trip in 2008. Escorted by a Maltese guy who drove me across the Sahara Desert, from Tripoli. He told me the same story then, and the tragedy continues.........Wrote this soon after..........
