When the Soviet Union collapsed, it lost its southern provinces -- Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan. These states have oil and gas deposits that, taken together, are thought to be equal to the remaining reserves of Saudi Arabia and Iraq, Americas two leading Middle Eastern suppliers of oil.
