The jewel in the crown was the Indian subcontinent; but the pathway to it ran through Afghanistan. Now the prize is oil -- getting it and transporting it -- and Afghanistan is again contested territory. The difference is that, this time around, it is the United States that will be playing the game with Russia. When the Soviet Union collapsed, it lost its southern provinces -- Kazakhstan, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, Turkmenistan, Kyrgyzstan, Azerbaijan. These states have oil and gas deposits that, taken together, are thought to be equal to the remaining reserves of Saudi Arabia and Iraq, Americas two leading Middle Eastern suppliers of oil.
