The kids from Lowpoint-Washburn Elementary got a surprise during their visit today. As they entered the classroom for a presentation on animals, there was a commotion followed by Miss Jill, your snake is loose! Couldnt be. Her locked enclosure had been checked just before the kids came into the building. A quick glance at Sneakys enclosure showed her securely basking under her heat lamp while the kids pointed down towards the floor at this visiting 3-1/2 foot long fox snake! We dont know exactly how he (or she) made it into the building, but as a refurbished cattle barn, there are plenty of gaps and cracks. It hung out for the program (in a container) and for the most part was well-mannered, but did demonstrate how some snakes mimic the rattlesnake by shaking their tails. Against the acrylic walls of the container, the tail really did sound like a rattlesnakes! We half-seriously contemplated the possibility of keeping it loose in the building to help Daisy with mouse control, but instead thawed out a mouse for a snack (which it readily ate), and sent it on its way.
