The lack of good, efficient train service in so many parts of the U.S. is a downright shame. And, particularly in California - with so much population density and clogged freeways and airports - the failure to build extensive statewide rail systems has been a major failing, one that undermines our states economy, environment, and quality of life. I give Governor Jerry Brown a lot of credit for fighting hard to move high speed rail forward, over the obstructionist forces fighting it. These same opponents no doubt would have been at the vanguard fighting the interstate highway system and the Golden Gate Bridge (which had hundreds of lawsuits against it). Building a new and fast rail network will never be easy, fast, or cheap. Yet, taking the long view, its essential for our states future.
