The last two days have been amazing. On Saturday, we went on a boat tour near the Nicaragua boarder on the Rio Negro or Black River. This was about an hour and a half ride on the very bumpy Costa Rican roads. Once there, we slathered down with bug spray and boarded the boat. The ride was about 2.5 hours and we saw many animals. We saw spider and howler monkeys as well as a sloth and countless birds. Once back to the boat landing, we ate dinner and made our way back to Fortuna. Yesterday we went to Coco Beach. Our driver met us at the hotel at around six AM. For some reason I was under the impression that the ride would be around 2.5-3 hours. Come to find out, the ride took us about 4 hours and 15 minutes. Since the roads are so curvy and bumpy, rides take much longer than they should. Once near the beach the scenery changed. It was much drier and beachier in Coco Beach. We have not seen the sun much in Fortuna so it was nice to see blue skies. The town around Coco beach was just like a small beach town. It really surprised me that the sand was not white; it was more of a dark brown or black. Right where the water met the sand, the water was murky but once we went out to about 2 feet deep the visibility drastically increased. I also was able to see a school of fish! My favorite part of this trip was being able to be in the ocean and experience another part of Costa Rica that is not Fortuna. I also enjoyed watching the FIFA World Cup final around a bunch of very passionate fans. The ride back was long but it was definitely worth the trip. I am starting to fall in love with Costa Rica. Pura Vida! P.S. Julie Coppedge and Sophie Reyes got to hold a bird and when I went to try to hold the bird, it bit me.
