The later years It is part of life to grow old. In due course of time, old age will come to most of us. The only way to prevent this is to die young. Fewer people are dying young these days. Therefore, what it will be like to be old is a question most of us must face. Not all of us will answer it in the same way. Everybody wants to live long , but nobody wants to be old. We glorify youth and think of the later years more in terms of their liabilities than their assets. We consider old age as a time of failing powers of body and mind, a lessening of the satisfactions and the joys of life. We tend to be afraid of the later years. Chief among the reasons for dreading them are feeling of being set aside , removal from active pursuits, sense of usefulness, boredom, fear of being unwanted, fear of being unable to adjust to changed conditions, insecurity, insufficient income, bodily weakness, and lack of personal appeal. Age is an attitude of mind. Old age need not to be burdensome or unhappy. It can have beauties and assets even as every earlier period of life has them. Old age is a portion of life; it is the perfection of a pattern, the fulfillment of what went before, the period of completion and the rounding out of life. As such it beef not be looked forward to with fear or dismay but rather with pleasurable anticipation. Wheather the later years will be happy or unhappy depends largely upon oneself. We ought to prepare for them. A good way to prepare for them is to think about them- not in fear or dread but in confidence and with sound, intelligent outlook. We can prepare ourselves physically for these years by fortifying ourselves when young with health of body . If we would have physical vigor in our later years, we must not dissipate carelessly the strength of preceding year. Old age is made sturdy and strong by prolonging to activity of the mind . Continuing mental activity gives one pleasure in advancing years and is also a benefit to ones physical welfare. Even the years of life beyond those to which the majority of people attain can give one interesting and satisfying experiences. However old we may become, we need not lose lifes zest. By maintaining a wholesome attitude, we can make our later years a delight instead of a burden. They can have for usgrace, force, fascinating, if not equal, at least comparable to those of the years of youth and middle age .
