The latest CSIRO citizen survey of Australian attitudes towards mining highlights shifting views about the impact of mining on lifestyles, the environment and the economy. More than 5000 people took part in the online survey. Participants were asked, among other things, whether state and federal governments were able to hold the mining industry accountable and whether legislation and regulation could be counted on to ensure mining companies did the right thing. Support of mine site rehabilitation was strongest in mining regions as were people’s views about the impact that mining was having on the environment, water quality and agriculture.
