The leadership of the Democratic Progressive Party is accusing the governing People’s Party of perpetuating politics of castigation and violence. This comes barely 10 days before the Malawi Electoral Commission officially launch the campaign period. Electoral stakeholders have been calling for an issue based campaign and not personalities, in order to have smooth elections. However, the DPP has cast doubts, if the campaign will indeed be an issue based one. DPP secretary general Jean Kalirani cited a reported incident in Mulanje central constituency, where the partys flags were pulled and burned down by suspected PP supporters. The incident Is said to have happened as the current parliamentarian Kondwani Nankhumwa was on a whistle stop before officially opening a bridge constructed in the area. And responding to the concerns, PP secretary general of the Paul Maulidi says their members are mostly provoked.
