The legitimacy of the Group’s campaigns is bound by the geography of its stations and the residential location of its membership. Add to this criteria, the aspirations of the Facebook Group following and SLUG has a mandate to involve itself in Brierley Hill public transport affairs. Sometimes the case for involvement is easy to make. SLUG wants to bring about the re-opening of a passenger railway from Stourbridge Junction to Dudley and beyond. A logical first step would be to open up a short stub branch as far as Brierley Hill on what is still a working railway. The consensus between the Group and Centro is that re-opening the line for commuters rides on the back of freight companies reinstating the whole line, so as to move wagons southward or northward. A very controversial project to move domestic waste to a new power plant in Brierley Hill raises the question, how far do we support this? A planning application has been rejected due to the objections of S.N.O.W. (Say No To Waste). This is a group which will be directly affected by traffic, noise and smell generated by the process. The company wants to utilise ex railway land at the former steel terminal in Moor Street, though leaving rails in place for bulk deliveries of waste matter by train. Here is the dilemma: SLUG encourages the movement of freight by rail. However, potentially, too much freight running from Stourbridge to Brierley Hill would prevent the introduction of a passenger railway because of restricted paths. None of us wants heavy plant and machinery in our back yards. Waste matter has a detrimental visual effect, as demonstrated in the Silver End and North Street area. The value of nearby properties plummets and the usefulness of a railway station is also diminished. A revised plan has been submitted and it may soon be too late to influence the decision. A Public Meeting will be held at 7.30pm Monday 15th September at Hawbush School. This may be the one and only chance to have your say.
