The lies, misinformation, and secrecy surrounding SB21 are impossible to ignore. Many social scientists have noted that oil is a precarious resource for a society to be built around: it brings with it the potential for great wealth, but also a high risk of corruption. Indeed, our government was wracked by oil company corruption just a few short years ago that sent many of our legislators to prison. SB21 is unmistakably similar to the legislation that those bribed politicians aimed to pass--a fact that should be raising more eyebrows than it has. Oil companies no longer need to bribe our legislators: now they own the legislature. Were it not for the oil company employees in our government, SB21 never would have seen the floor, let alone passed. No government free of the financial influence of the oil companies ever would have passes legislation as shamelessly terrible for Alaska as SB21. No independent commission ever would have set our taxes so low that oil companies will walk away with our oil--without paying a dime. This is the definition of audacity, and the road to ruin. This is what happens when the balance of powers in a capitalist system breaks down, and a powerful industry not only fights for itself but has captured the regulatory and taxation bodies that are supposed to oversee it. Government for oil, by oil, of oil. We know that SB21 will destroy Alaska financially--indeed, it already is doing so, with Parnells government operating at catastrophic deficits. Dont give the supporters of SB21 the chance to prove us right. Make those YES bubbles shine, folks.
