The literature of Bhutan is derived from Buddhist philosophy and is rich, vast and extensive. Two great ecclesiastical encyclopedias Tripitaka and Commentarial Canon are very important. These were translated from Sanskrit to Chhockay(classical language) during the 9th century AD by the great Tibetan master and translater Marpa Chhoki Lodyo and his disciplines. At the same time many Bhutanese eminent monks and scholars went to Tibet for higher studies in Buddhist philosophy. They returned with great knowledge and contributed to the development of Bhutanese literature.
