The local roads policing team were out and about today and concentrated on issues that you have identified across the Newry & Mourne area. This morning they spent some time in the area of Canal Street relating to the issue if overweight vehicles using this street. They detected 1 offending driver. Following complaints of speeding on the Belfast Road between the Court and Mourne Country they carried out specific speed detection in this area and all drivers were complying with the limit. Damolly Road got a touch then during rush your and only one motorist was detected over the limit. Then just as it was nearing finishing time one of the Officers stopped a car which was veering over the white line and the driver was in fact on the phone. The Officer spoke to the driver who asked for a break as he had his 1 day old baby in the car and was bringing his wife and new baby home!!! He the proceeded to tell the Officer he didnt pull over for him as he hadnt seen him, rather he pulled over because of the phone call! Now feel free to let me know if Im wrong but I reckon this is a bit selfish, 1 day old baby in the car, wife in the car who has just given birth and new Daddy is on the phone while driving them home. Seriously. Anyway he got himself 3 points and a £60 fine. That sixty quid would buy an awful lot of pampers (other nappies are available) or baby clothes or even buy Daddy a few beers to wet the babys head with. And its a bit of a dampener for Babys first night home. Folks, the message is clear if your caught speeding, using the mobile phone or not wearing your seat belt you WILL get, as a minimum a ticket. There have been too many tragedies on our roads of late, slow down, concentrate and expect the unexpected.
