The love of money is the root of all evil I love reading the historical markers--gives me a feel for the landscape and often how it relates to the present. Couple weeks ago was working my way up through Wyoming and saw a marker about Dull Knifes capture. Dull Knife was one of the chiefs organizing the defense of the encampment on the Little Big Horn when Custer and the 7th Cavalry attacked. After the battle he had moved his band of about 700 warriors and their families south into Wyoming. They were in their winter camp when the cavalry attacked and overran them. They were forced to march over 100 miles in sub-zero weather and over 100 died. The rest were sent to a reservation which was basically an open-air prison where many starved. The Indians had mastered the fine art of surviving in this sparse wilderness by living in harmony with the landscape, not destroying it. Few people live in it today because its a harsh environment. The Indians had ownership of the land through many treaties that guaranteed they could live there unmolested as long as the grass grows and the wind blows and so on and so forth. Gold was discovered in California and then in the sacred Black Hills (all the land was sacred to the Indians though), and that was the end of the treaties. A lot of knowledge was lost when we destroyed those cultures, and we may have to pay for that. In many ways we are destroying ourselves when we destroy others...
