The lucrative tourist destination of the Garden Route will be targeted as part of the Department of Transport’s expansion programme. “E-Tolls are a reliable way of raising funds for infrastructure development,” explained a media release from the department. “The Western Cape’s roads are well maintained, and as a result, the costs of this upkeep continue to rise. The more tourists that flock to the area, the more infrastructure development and maintenance needs to take place.” Once the system is set up in the Western Cape, it will be rolled out across South Africa, targeting the main highways and transport routes. Chinese, Indian consortiums appointed A Chinese consortium has been appointed to manufacture the massive steel gantries that will be erected on the N2 that runs along the coast between Cape Town and Port Elizabeth According to the statement, the development of the integrated IT system has been commissioned, and an India-based consortium will be responsible for implementing the complex system which will synchronise with the government’s national roads database in order to issue fines. “This will be a far more efficient system than the one in Gauteng, and all the teething problems that were experienced with the initial rollout of the system have now been sorted out,” said the statement. Tourism to be affected Towns including Plettenberg Bay, Knysna, George, Mossel Bay and Somerset West could be affected as up to three e-toll gantries are planned for the N2 route.
