The main focus of Mr Abes visit - and that of his delegation - to the Pacific nation is business. In May, Papua New Guinea exported its first cargo of liquid natural gas, marking an historic moment which saw the country emerge as an energy supplier to Asia. Murray Woo, chairman of the PNG Manufacturers Council, says Japans role in the development of PNGs gas is crucial. It is the first one to buy LNG off Papua New Guinea and it is a milestone in the history of Paua New Guinea, he said. Obviously it is the start of a new phase in the relationship between the two countries. The Manufacturers Council and the Business Council of PNG will host a business breakfast for Mr Abe and his delegation on Friday. PNGs business community will be waiting to hear the latest on plans by Mitsubishi Corporation and Itochu for a $US1 billion petrochemical plant as well as other investments. Mr Abe will travel to the northern town of Wewak on Friday to honour the 200,000 Japanese soldiers who died during the New Guinea campaign in World War II. He will also visit Cape Wom, the site of the Japanese Armys surrender in PNG, before returning to Japan on Saturday morning. PNG is the final stop on Mr Abes three-nation tour that has included official visits to Australia and New Zealand.
