The man strolled upon a levy alongside the river and sat to view - TopicsExpress

The man strolled upon a levy alongside the river and sat to view the setting sun. He gazed west and beheld a fiery disc being slowly and inexorably extinguished in a hue of somber ochre as if drowning in some unseen celestial whirlpool. Surrounding the sun was a firmament suffused with saffron and scarlet and a myriad other colors warm and vibrant to which no designation had yet been ascribed by the pretensions of his species, which seemed so terribly diminutive when judged alongside such awesome displays of heavenly dominion. The man relished not only the beauty of this ambiance, but also the idea that never again would he witness this sunset from this context in time and space. The sun would rise and set billions of times hence, but not like this. The effulgent palette of this particular sunset was unique to this precise moment. The man then realized that past and future are but wellsprings of depthless pain and anxiety. Human misery knows no absolutes. The man pondered at how quickly and furtively apprehensions about the future transition into bitter memories of the past and how fruitless it is to dwell over either, because neither future nor past exist save for the mind’s eye. Thus, the man redirected his rapt attention toward the fading star, and he felt privileged to have enough sentience to acknowledge the power of the present. He felt enlightened.
