The management of Holloway Sportswear (where Ive worked for the last 5 years) announced today that 12 people at our facility will lose their positions by the end of the year. Theyll offer new positions where possible. They have restructured several departments since I arrived here. Well over 100 people have been affected by the relentless pressure of the marketplace. Productivity is usually measured by how much can be done with less labor, ultimately reducing costs by reducing payroll. Ive often cynically remarked that Im automating myself out of a job, by creating embroidery fonts and templates that customers can use to develop their own layouts. Ironically, its that skill that makes me valuable to the garment decoration industry, such as it is.
