The maximum brunt of conflict and lack of governance - TopicsExpress

The maximum brunt of conflict and lack of governance accountability in Kashmir has been faced by our women folk. Be it lack of specialized healthcare, drinking water, educational facilities or social security, it is our women who have been facing and braving it all. In many areas, especially villages, women still have to trek long distances to fetch water daily for families, and more often this contaminated water is a carrier of diseases, playing havoc with the health of our communities. There is also lack of proper health infrastructure across the valley, forcing people to from rural areas to travel long distances and seek medical assistance in Srinagar, where health institutions are already overcrowded. Lack of proper health care in rural areas, especially non-availability of gynecologists, pediatricians and basic health systems has proven fatal at times in these locations, where the time taken to reach critical facilities in the city facilities could become a matter of life and death. Our women folk, who have been the worst sufferers in Kashmir in the past decades, need special attention in governance policies, since it is they who act as the basic support system in families. We are determined to improve the lives of women folk here, by improving social services, healthcare, education facilities and support systems.
