The medical word of the day: Virus or viral infection What is a viral infection (Virus) Virus derived from Latin word Virus meaning Toxin - Poison - Virus is a tiny organism having genetic materials (RNA OR DNA) surrounded by a protein, lipid (fat) or glycoprotein coat. Some specialists in microbiology classify viruses as micro organisms while other microbiologists do not because viruses are non living. They rather describe viruses as microscopic infective agents. Viruses are unique microorganisms because they cannot reproduce without a host cells. After contacting a host cell, a virus will bring its genetic materials into the host cell and replace that host cell function. The cell now become infected, continues to reproduce, but it reproduces more viral protein and genetic material instead of its usual products. This process earns viruses the classification of parasite The most important way to prevent these microscopic infectve agents from invading our body and destroy it is by frequent hand washing!
