The monument commemorates the extermination of the Cayuga People at Teaoga (Ithaca). It is said in local history that the American troops were fired up on whiskey and rum. The Teaoga town population of 10,000 were attacked and the town was destroyed. The term redskin refers to the practice of the soldiers to skin the Cayuga People and the tanned skin was used to patch the soldiers boots. The tanned skin was reddish in color. The remains and bodies were thrown into the south end of Cayuga lake, where scuba diving is banned to the present.
