The most extreme forestry policy in more than a century could be established by a bill currently in Congress. It would make logging the top-priority use of our forests, superseding multiple-use management that gives equal standing to wildlife, water, and wilderness. Please ask your representative to oppose this legislation! Inaccurately named the Restoring Healthy Forests for Healthy Communities Act, this legislation would require the designation of “forest revenue areas” in every national forest. These legally enforceable obligations would require the cutting of a mandated amount of commercial timber. This “annual volume requirement” would override multiple-use management and could impose unsustainable logging on popular designations such as national recreation areas, wild and scenic river corridors, and lands protected by the Roadless Area Conservation Rule. This bill would also undermine the National Environmental Policy Act and turn the Forest Service into an agent opposed to protecting endangered species. It would put an end to northern spotted owl protection, protection of ancient forests in the Northwest, roadless area protection, and the eligibility of lands for wilderness designation, and would require the destruction of the magnificent rain forests of southeast Alaska. Please take action today to stop this extreme bill.
