The most fundamental way to judge how well a government is in touch with the people is how the people respond to taxes. In a perfect world, people would understand and even be happy to pay their taxes, as they would know that their money will definitely be spent by the government in the best way possible to serve the community. Does any American actually feel anything close to this? Conservatives see tax day as the day the government takes their money and give it to the lazy, but tolerate it because it also funds the military and keeps them safe. Liberals see tax day as the day that the government takes their money to give to executives, but tolerate it because it also funds the schools and the roads and the hospitals and feeding the needy. Until we see a government without waste, without fraud, and without corruption, tax day will remain a day when we tolerate our money being spent on something stupid so that the rest of it will be spent on something worthwhile. -Jordan
