The newly-elected Mayor of Rome wasted no time in keeping one of his campaign promises: he has banned vehicular traffic on the Via dei Fori Imperiali which runs right by the Coliseum, and he has banned traffic around the huge amphitheater. The idea is to prevent the vibration which damages the ancient travertine and brick fabric and --to some extent--lessen the exhaust pollution which discolors the monuments. The people of Rome are, predictably, divided about this decision. Some laud the Mayor for tackling this problem; others lament the disappearance of parking spots in a city which has been notorious for traffic congestion since probably the time of Juvenal.
