The news is filled with the various polls regarding the Scottish independence vote. The apparently close run contest doesnt appear to have addressed one inevitable consequence. No matter who wins, judging by the close run contest, Salmond will have seriously upset half of the Scottish population. By extending the franchise to 16 and 17 year olds and excluding Scots abroad, he has loaded the die in favour of the independence vote. Wouldnt a two thirds majority ensured an unequivocal and convincing outcome? Expect major problems in Scotland in the coming years regardless of next weeks result. The 1979 referrendum required a simple majority, but the requirement of a >40% majority of the electorate. Also the voting age has been lowered to 16 (will this extend to the next general election?).
